How to Keep Your Dog Happy and Safe During the Festive Season 🎄🐾

The festive season is a magical time filled with decorations, family gatherings and delicious treats. While it’s a time of joy for humans, it can be overwhelming or even risky for our furry friends. As a responsible dog owner, it’s essential to plan ahead to ensure your dog stays happy, healthy and stress-free during the holidays. Here are some tips to help you and your canine companion navigate the festive season:

1. Keep Decorations Dog-Safe

Festive decorations like tinsel, fairy lights and ornaments can be tempting for curious pups to chew on. To keep your dog safe:

  • Place decorations out of reach or secure them firmly.
  • Avoid using edible ornaments, like chocolate or candy canes, which can be toxic to dogs.
  • Choose shatterproof ornaments to prevent injuries if they fall.

2. Be Cautious with Festive Foods

Holiday feasts often include foods that are dangerous for dogs, such as:

  • Chocolate: Highly toxic to dogs.
  • Onions, garlic and leeks: Found in stuffing and harmful to your pup.
  • Cooked bones: Can splinter and cause internal injuries.
  • Alcohol: Even small amounts can be toxic.

Instead, prepare dog-friendly treats or keep their usual food schedule intact to avoid upset stomachs.

3. Create a Safe Space

The hustle and bustle of guests, loud music and fireworks can overwhelm dogs. Provide a quiet, comfortable area where they can retreat if they feel stressed. Include:

  • Their bed or favourite blanket.
  • A few toys for comfort.
  • Access to water and treats.

Let guests know to respect this space and avoid disturbing your dog while they’re resting.

4. Plan for Fireworks

Fireworks are a common source of stress for dogs during the festive season. Help your dog stay calm by:

  • Keeping them indoors and closing windows and curtains to muffle the sound.
  • Playing calming music or white noise to mask the noise of fireworks.
  • Using calming aids like anxiety vests or pheromone diffusers if needed.

5. Maintain Their Routine

Dogs thrive on routine, so try to keep their feeding, exercise and bedtime schedules consistent. If your day is packed with holiday activities, carve out time for a walk or play session to help them burn off energy.

6. Watch Out for Holiday Plants

Some popular festive plants, like poinsettias, holly and mistletoe, can be toxic if ingested. Place them out of reach or choose pet-safe alternatives.

7. Include Them in the Celebrations

Your dog is part of the family, so let them join in the fun! Consider:

  • Giving them a festive toy or treat as a gift.
  • Including them in family photos with holiday accessories (like a cute bandana or festive sweater).
  • Taking them on a winter walk to enjoy the crisp air and decorations.

8. Be Mindful of Visitors

Not all guests are familiar with dogs and not all dogs are comfortable with visitors. Set boundaries, such as:

  • Letting your dog meet guests at their own pace.
  • Supervising interactions with children.
  • Reminding guests not to feed your dog any table scraps.

9. Plan Ahead for Travel

If you’re traveling during the holidays, decide whether your dog will join you or stay with a trusted sitter. If they’re coming along:

  • Pack their essentials: food, water, leash and a familiar blanket.
  • Ensure their ID tag and microchip details are up to date.
  • Take breaks during long car journeys to let them stretch and relieve themselves.

10. Show Them Extra Love

The festive season can be busy, but don’t forget to give your dog plenty of affection. Extra cuddles, playtime and attention will help them feel secure and loved.

Happy Holidays! 🎅🐶

The festive season is all about sharing joy with the ones we love—including our four-legged family members. With a little preparation and mindfulness, you can ensure a safe and memorable holiday season for both you and your dog. Cheers to wagging tails and holiday magic!
